Once the expiry dates are in, the app takes it from there. Fraidy checks your inventory once a day, rolls everything that is about to expire or already has into one notification, pushes it to your phone and keeps a copy on the in-app notifications screen. You decide how many days of warning you get.
- 1 A push arrives around 9 a.m. your time
- 2 Tap the bell next to the greeting on Home
- 3 On "Notifications", tap "Mark all read"
- 4 Pick how many days ahead in Settings → "Days of advance warning"
When reminders are sent
Fraidy checks your inventory once a day at around 9:00 a.m. in your own time zone, and counts the days left by your local calendar. When you travel, opening the app switches it to the local time zone.
Reminders in your time zone need app version 1.1.2 or later. Older versions always use 9:00 a.m. Taiwan time (UTC+8).
Each batch is notified once at each of three points:
| When | What it means |
|---|---|
| When it enters your advance-warning window | Nearly there — plan to use it up. 7 days before expiry by default |
| On the expiry date | Today is the last day |
| After expiry | The date has passed — check whether it is still usable |
Each stage is only notified once, so you will not be nagged every day.
Only items that are in your inventory and have an expiry date are included. Things still on the shopping list are not.
Choose how many days of warning you get
- Go to the “Settings” tab → “Preferences”.
- Make sure “Expiry Reminders” is on — “Days of advance warning” only appears below it while reminders are switched on.
- Tap “Days of advance warning” and pick 3, 7, 14, 20 or 30 days.
The next morning’s check uses the new number. The “Expiring Soon” list in the Inventory tab follows the same window, so you can see at a glance what falls inside it.
Which to pick:
- Mostly fresh food, milk and bread — 3 or 7 days. Earlier warnings are easy to ignore.
- Mostly dry goods, tins, medicine or skincare — 14 to 30 days, to leave time to use things up or restock.
Choosing the number of days needs app version 1.1.0 or later. Older versions always remind you 7 days before expiry.
What a reminder looks like
Everything that needs a reminder for you on a given day is combined into one notification titled “Expiry reminder”, listing the item names — for example:
When there are more than three items, the first three are shown with the total count; open the app for the full list.
The notification is written in your app language (app version 1.1.0 or later).
Where to find notifications
Push notifications appear in your phone’s notification centre. The first time you open the app, your phone asks whether Fraidy may send notifications — choose Allow.
In-app notifications screen:
- On the home screen there is a bell to the right of the greeting. A red dot means you have unread notifications.
- Tap the bell to open “Notifications”, grouped into “Today”, “Yesterday” and “Earlier”.
- Tap a notification to mark it as read, or tap “Mark all read” at the top right to clear the red dot in one go.
- To tidy up, tap “Clear all” at the top right. After you confirm, all of your notifications in this group are removed; this cannot be undone.
Even if you miss a push notification, the in-app screen keeps the record.
Turn expiry reminders on or off
Go to the “Settings” tab → “Preferences” → “Expiry Reminders”. It is on by default.
When it is off, your account stops receiving expiry push notifications on every device you are signed in on, though they still appear on the in-app notifications screen. Each family member can choose for themselves.
Not getting reminders? Check these in order
- Does the item have an expiry date? Shopping-list items only count after you tick them off, tap “Add to Inventory” and enter a date.
- The in-app switch — Settings → Preferences → “Expiry Reminders” should be on.
- Your phone’s settings — on iPhone, Settings → Notifications → Fraidy; on Android, Settings → Apps → Fraidy → Notifications. Make sure notifications are allowed.
- It is not time yet — items that expire beyond your advance-warning window are not notified yet. With 7 days set, something expiring in 10 days has no reminder yet, and anything added today waits for the next morning’s check.
- Look at the in-app notifications screen — if the reminder is there but no push arrived, the cause is almost always the phone permission in step 3.
Reminders in a family group
When something in your family group is about to expire, every member gets their own reminder — using the number of days each of them chose, in each person’s app language, arriving in the morning where each of them is. If you pick 3 days and a family member picks 14, you will each be told at a different time.
When someone joins the group with an invite code, the other members also get a new-member notification.
Reminders are only as good as the dates behind them: how to add items.
Common questions
- What time does Fraidy send expiry reminders?
- Once a day, at around 9:00 a.m. in the time zone your phone is set to (app version 1.1.2 or later; older versions use 9:00 a.m. Taiwan time). Everything that needs a reminder for you that day is combined into a single notification.
- Can I choose how many days in advance I am reminded?
- Yes. Go to Settings → Preferences → "Days of advance warning" and pick 3, 7, 14, 20 or 30 days; the default is 7. This needs app version 1.1.0 or later — older versions always remind you 7 days before expiry.
- Will I be reminded about the same item over and over?
- No. Each batch is notified once at each of three points — when it enters your advance-warning window, on the day it expires, and after it has expired. The same stage is never repeated.
- Why am I not getting expiry reminders?
- Check, in order, that the item is in your inventory with an expiry date, that "Expiry Reminders" is on in Settings, and that your phone allows Fraidy to send notifications. You can also tap the bell on the home screen to see whether the reminder is on the in-app notifications screen.
- Does my family get reminders for things I added?
- Yes. When something in your family group is about to expire, every member gets their own reminder, based on the number of days, the app language and the time zone of each of them.
