How to add, edit and reorder categories in Fraidy

Categories decide how your inventory is grouped and which chips appear under Quick Select on the home screen. A minute spent matching them to how your home is organised makes adding items much faster.
- 1 Settings → Preferences → "Manage Categories"
- 2 Tap "+" at the top right to add one
- 3 Enter a name and an emoji icon, then tap "Save"
- 4 Hold the handle on the left and drag to reorder
Opening “Manage Categories”
There are three ways in, all leading to the same screen:
- “Settings” tab → “Preferences” → “Manage Categories”
- ”+ More” at the end of Quick Select on the home screen
- “Add Category” in the category list when adding an item or a shopping-list entry
The starter categories
The first time you use Fraidy, four categories are created for you, named in your app language: Food 🍱, Drinks 🥤, Household 🧴 and Medicine 💊.
If you started using the app on a version older than 1.1.0, your starter categories may have been created with Chinese names. Here is what they mean:
| Name in the app | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 食品 🍱 | Food |
| 飲料 🥤 | Drinks |
| 日用品 🧴 | Household items |
| 藥品 💊 | Medicine |
Rename any of them to whatever suits you using the pencil icon described below.
Add a category
- On the “Manage Categories” screen, tap ”+” at the top right.
- In the “Add Category” window, enter a “Name” — for example “Supplements”, “Cosmetics” or “Pet supplies”.
- Under “Icon”, enter an emoji or some text. Tapping the preview above opens the emoji keyboard.
- Tap “Save”.
Edit or delete a category
Each category has two icons on the right:
- Pencil — change its name or icon.
- Bin — delete it, after confirming.
Deleting a category does not delete its items. They move to “Uncategorized”, and you can pick a new category for them from Item Details.
Change the order
Press and hold the handle on the left of a category (the six-dot icon) and drag it up or down. A hint at the bottom of the screen reads “Drag to reorder”.
The order matters in two places:
- “Quick Select” on the home screen only shows the first 5 categories, so put the ones you add most often at the top.
- The category list on the add screens follows the same order.
Ways to organise categories
- By where things are kept — fridge, freezer, pantry, first-aid box, bathroom. The most natural when you are tidying up.
- By type — food, drinks, medicine, supplements, cosmetics, cleaning products. Works well for households with lots of different things.
- Do not over-split — with too many categories, choosing one takes longer than adding the item. Start with 5 to 8 and add more when you need them.
Once your categories are set up, start adding items.
Common questions
- Which categories does Fraidy start with?
- Four starter categories are created the first time you use the app — Food 🍱, Drinks 🥤, Household 🧴 and Medicine 💊, named in your app language. Accounts that started on a version older than 1.1.0 may have Chinese names (食品, 飲料, 日用品, 藥品) instead, which you can rename.
- Does deleting a category delete its items?
- No. The items are kept and move to "Uncategorized", where you can give them a new category later.
- How do I change the category chips on the home screen?
- Quick Select on the home screen shows the first 5 categories in your list. Drag the ones you use most to the top in "Manage Categories".
- Can my family see the categories I create?
- Yes. Categories belong to the family group, so everyone in the group shares the same set.
